PORTLAND — Portland Public Schools is considering a new, simple dress policy meant to end concerns about the judgment calls required with the district’s current policy.
The Oregonian/Oregon Live reports that a panel of teachers, students, parents and administrators did months of research before recommending a rewrite of Portland’s dress code.
The proposal would simply require a top with fabric on the front and sides, including opaque fabric over breasts; a bottom that covers the genitals, buttocks and all portions of underwear except the waist band; and shoes.
The new regulations would do away subjective prohibitions on gang colors and clothing that is sexually suggestive, disruptive or offensive.
Students would still be barred from wearing clothing showing drugs, alcohol or tobacco; expressing hate speech; depicting or encouraging violence; or displaying pornography.
