Olympia – A Washington man has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal crash on Joint Base Lewis-McChord property.

The Olympian reported that police said the 24-year-old Olympia driver rolled his jeep on a dirt road Saturday night, causing it to catch fire.

The crash killed Shawn Herndon, 22, of Olympia. The Thurston County coroner said an official cause of death is still pending.

Officials said a female passenger was taken to the hospital with a broken wrist and a male passenger jumped out of the vehicle when he realized it was going to flip. He was not injured.

Deputies said the driver was distraught at the scene and kept saying, “I just killed my friend.” Police said the man smelled of alcohol. Blood test results weren’t available Monday.
