Save the Date: Celebrate Native American, island culture, customs

• Local Native American community members share traditional songs, dances and customs with the public at the Native American Traditional Pow Wow. Native American Education Program Title VII hosts the event, featuring local student dancers and drummers, with grand entries at 1 and 6 p.m. today. The event will also feature 15 craft vendors and concessions selling frybread and Indian tacos from noon to 10:30 p.m. at Covington Middle School, 11200 N.E. Rosewood Road, Vancouver. • The sounds of the islands will resonate during the third annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival. The concert will highlight the fingerstyle guitar genre of Hawaii. Catch performances by guitarists LT Smooth, Stephen Inglis, Bobby Moderow and more. The concert begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, 3101 Main St., Vancouver. • Columbia Crest Lions club hosts Scrabble With a Cause, a fundraising event to raise money for community initiatives and sight and hearing programs. Participants can play as an individual or a team of up to four from 1 to 5 p.m. March 12. Teams are encouraged to wear silly hats. Each entry includes three rounds of play and entry for a door prize at Seton Catholic High School, 811 N.E. 112th Ave., Vancouver.

• The 25th annual Paddy Hough Parade will feature the students, staff and the local community in a celebration of Hough Elementary School its neighborhoods and city. Steve Vance, Hough Elementary School principal, will be the grand marshal of the parade, which is themed “Creativity Promotes Learning.” The parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday from Hough Elementary School, 1900 Daniels St., Vancouver, continuing along 24th and Main streets, along McLoughlin Boulevard before finishing at the elementary school. 360-313-2120 or http://hough.vansd.org

• Returning for its 18th year, GameStorm lets participants play a variety of tabletop games from March 17 through 20, from simple board games to multiple hour role-playing sessions. There will be panels featuring industry leaders and game designers, games and crafts for children, and the prototype testing Game Lab at the Hilton Vancouver Washington, 301 W. Sixth St., Vancouver. • The Vancouver Symphony Chamber Series will present “The Magic of Opera,” a collaborative concert with the Portland Opera. Musicians from the orchestra will be joined by the opera’s resident artists for arias from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd,” Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” and Gioachino Rossini’s “The Italian Girl in Algiers.” The concert begins at 3 p.m. March 20 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. Couve Clover Run features 3-, 7- and 10-mile courses that take participants through Officers Row, Fort Vancouver and the Vancouver Farmers Market on March 20. Post-race events include sweet and savory treats, brews from local pubs and prizes for festive costumes starting at Main Event Sports Grill, 800 Main St., Vancouver.
