Vancouver Public Schools Superintendent Steven Webb is in Washington, D.C., today, where he will be among educators from around the nation invited to meet President Barack Obama at the White House Great Educators Event. The event recognizes the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, state teachers of the year and other notable educators.

Webb was invited because he was one of four finalists for national Superintendent of the Year, chosen by the American Association of School Administrators. He is the 2016 Washington Superintendent of the Year. He also was named a U.S. Department of Education Future Ready Leader, said Tom Hagley, district spokesman.

Since 2010, the district’s four-year on-time graduation rate has risen from 64 percent to more than 80 percent.

About 24,000 students attend 37 district schools. Webb was appointed superintendent in 2008.
