Testing at Tacoma schools shows improvements in lead levels

TACOMA — Officials say further testing at three Tacoma elementary schools that previously had high levels of lead in their drinking water indicates the water is now safe to drink.

The News Tribune reports district officials said Monday that parents of students at Larchmont, Manitou Park and Reed elementary schools had been informed that the water is at acceptable levels.

The announcement comes after the district revealed last week that extraordinarily high levels of lead had been found at Mann and Reed elementary schools in tests conducted in May 2015. New testing last week showed Mann still had high levels of lead in several water fixtures.

Officials are still awaiting follow-up test results from other Tacoma elementary schools with high lead levels, including Browns Point, Point Defiance, Birney, Stanley and Whitman.
