Letter: Tell Mom her importance

By Wayne Mayo, Scappoose, Ore.

“With a face only a Mother could love” is a phrase which reveals how a mother’s love is commonly taken for granted.

Ben Carson’s book underlines the influence his single mother and her faith had on him, growing up poor, black, and alone. She inspired him, opening doors to a career in neurological medicine and significant American leadership.

My mother was widowed when my brother and I were 9 and 12. She taught piano to hundreds in our small town to pay the bills. Mom delivered Meals on Wheels from its inception in the 1970s until she shattered her shoulder in 2015.

As you honor your mother, give thought to the sacrifices, forgiveness, advice, encouragement, and the work that you were and to some degree, still are. Consider all you saw and heard from this exceptional person that’s been part of your personality, your attitude and values all these years.

Then tell her.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
