Letter: Panama Papers shocking

By Herb Stokes, Vancouver

Regarding the Panama Papers, it is breathtaking to realize how many wealthy people and celebrities paid no income taxes while the middle class have been called on to continually bankroll the schemes and policies that politicians promote, which are of little help to the middle class. They do, however, support criminally poor-run banks that failed, and the auto factories that lost millions during the 2008-2010 fiscal meltdown.

Contrarily, when a member of the middle class is caught neglecting taxes, the full weight of the IRS comes down on him. Cars and furniture are removed from the home while owners watch in disbelief. The Gestapo tactics slowed after 2010; the government received a black eye by their rough treatment of hard-working homeowners, while no one was held accountable within the bank and auto businesses, and the IRS was leashed again to go easier on homeowners after a giving free pass to big business.

I’m sure there is a whirlwind of activity being created to withhold the names of the people involved. I wonder if we will ever get to know the truth about this latest scandal.

This is another reason why we are becoming skeptics of the vaunted American way of life when we are left holding onto a small empty sack that once contained pride.
