Letter: Oppose Longview coal terminal

By Pat Freiberg, Vancouver
Published: May 14, 2016, 6:00am

Given climate instability, one might think coal burning was a thing of the past. Yet, Millennium Bulk Terminal proposes building the continent’s largest coal terminal in Longview. If approved, there will be 18 additional milelong trains trekking through Vancouver daily.

There is substantial Longview opposition yet The Daily News, the ILWU and the Cowlitz County Economic Development Commission have come out in favor of the terminal, forecasting jobs and economic benefits. Unfortunately, I don’t see the economic benefit for children and grandchildren not having a habitable planet on which to live.

Please attend the public hearing, 1 to 9 p.m. May 24 at the Cowlitz County Regional Conference Center, 1900 Seventh Ave., Longview. A bus will leave St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 3 p.m. and return at 9 p.m., and groups will be meeting at noon at Salmon Creek Park & Ride.

Come, have fun, do a good deed for the planet.
