Hunt still on for escaped Clark County jail inmate

Law enforcement officials worked throughout the night Thursday and all day Friday searching for an inmate who tricked jailers into mistakenly discharging him from the Clark County Jail. Michael Diontae Johnson is still missing

Johnson, 30, reportedly swapped identities with another inmate who was scheduled to be released Thursday and walked out of the jail about 8:30 a.m., according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Jail staff noticed Johnson missing during a scheduled meal and head count a few hours later. Law enforcement have been searching for him ever since.

Benton to lose county job as department reorganizes

Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, will lose his county job as part of a reorganization of the Department of Environmental Services, Acting County Manager Mark McCauley said this afternoon. Benton heads that department.

As of July 1, the department will be dissolved and its functions absorbed into other departments, McCauley said. Benton and three other employees who were laid off as part of the reorganization will be on paid administrative leave through June 30.

And it was revealed Friday that just weeks before Benton was ousted from his job heading the county’s environmental services department, the Vancouver state senator filed a whistleblower complaint accusing  McCauley of illegal actions and political retaliation.

Port of Vancouver’s Terminal 1 will get a Marriott AC Hotel

A boutique hotel operated by the huge Marriott chain is coming to the Port of Vancouver’s Terminal 1 and will be a cornerstone of the port’s redevelopment of its prime waterfront property, the port disclosed Tuesday.

Marriott’s AC Hotels brand was chosen for the property near the former Red Lion at the Quay, which closed last fall. The hotel will be built by Vesta Hospitality, a Vancouver-based hotel developer and operator.

Who will land at Lynch home?

The home of late philanthropists Ed and Dollie Lynch is not located where one would expect to find a $3,695,000 home. Houses close to the lavish art deco-inspired estate at the corner of Northwest Franklin and 48th streets in west Vancouver are on the market for around $300,000.

“They didn’t want to be in a private community. They didn’t want to be out of touch and away from everyday people,” said the couple’s son, Michael Lynch. “It’s not an exclusive community, and it’s not meant to be.”
