TACOMA — Former state lawmaker Larry Seaquist has dropped out of the race for superintendent of public instruction to try to return to the state House. The former Democratic lawmaker from Gig Harbor lost his seat in 2014 to Michele Caldier of Port Orchard.
The News Tribune reports he is going to challenge Caldier’s seatmate, Republican Jesse Young.
Seaquist says Democratic party leaders encouraged him in recent days to run for the state House instead of the running to head the state’s education department. Seaquist previously served four terms in the state Legislature.
The 77-year-old says he wants to do what he can to help Democrats maintain control of the state House this November. Democrats hold a narrow 50-48 majority in the House, while Republicans control the state Senate.
