SILENT SERVICE AWARD

Ken and Peggy Kirkman, volunteers with the North County Community Food Bank and North County School Readiness program, were honored by the Peter R. Marsh Foundation and presented the Silent Service Award at a Battle Ground City Council meeting this month.

Since 2009, the Kirkmans have volunteered with the food bank; Ken drives a van, picking up food from businesses, and Peggy helps new volunteers learn their jobs. They played an integral part in creating the North County School Readiness program 11 years ago, which provides new backpacks and school supplies, free immunizations and used clothing to local students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The Kirkmans donate funds, food, hygiene and cleaning supplies, school supplies and about 42 service hours every month for people living in poverty.
