Letter: Quietly protest Trump rally

By Kristen Trefren, Vancouver
Published: October 1, 2016, 6:00am

If Donald Trump wins the election, it will be a national tragedy and an internationally destabilizing force. After a tragedy, people may hold a candlelight vigil in honor of the dead. Let’s not wait for that. Whether we support Trump or Hillary Clinton, we all venerate the Constitution, including the free speech and right of public assembly that lets Joey Gibson of Vancouver organize a pro-Trump rally at 2 p.m. Sunday at Esther Short Park.

Speakers will talk about political correctness and its impact on free speech. Freedom of speech means that people who attend this rally should be heard. Let’s not shout them down. Let our presence show our belief that Trump is a defender of the U.S. of I. He’s no defender of the Constitution, which guarantees us freedom of speech, assembly, and equality. Bring placards and join me as silent witness to the rally.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
