Winterhawks’ road trip starts with victory at Seattle

The Portland Winterhawks opened an eight-game road trip with a 6-1 Western Hockey League win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday at the ShoWare Center in Kent.

Portland (3-1-0-0) never trailed in the game.

Skyler McKenzie opened the scoring on a power play 8:19 into the game. The Hawks extended the lead at 15:03 on a power-play goal by Colton Veloso.

Keegan Iverson had two goals and an assist for Portland, and Keoni Texeira had four assists. Ryan Hughes and Cody Glass each had two assists.

Cole Kehler earned the win in net for the Hawks, as he stopped 25 of 26 Seattle shots.

Portland’s next stop will be at Swift Current on Tuesday to take on the Broncos as the Winterhawks head through the East Division for six games, before wrapping up the trek in Spokane on Oct. 15.
