Letter: Prop 1 would burden elders

By Craig Brown, Vancouver

I am writing today to urge a no vote on Prop 1. While raising property taxes seems such a simple solution to the housing problem, there are better ones available.

I look around my neighborhood and I see many fellow seniors struggling to stay in their own homes. They are already asked to support schools, parks, the port, fire stations, libraries and so on. The rise in property values continues to drive taxes higher every year even without adding new levies.

Most of my neighbors live on a fixed income making it harder to make ends meet each year. Increases to property taxes are passed on to tenants, driving high rents even higher. A more sensible solution would be to incentivize the building of more multi-family housing. More housing is the only permanent solution to this problem. Government’s involvement in housing should be focused on making it easier and cheaper to build in Clark County.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
