Letter: Support those who serve

With the recent conclusion of National Suicide Prevention Month (September), it is important we do not forget the tragedy that often strikes families throughout the year. Among the highest percentages of suicides are veterans, with an average of 20 suicides per day. It is important that we bring awareness to this tragedy and commit to providing services for those in need, something that seems to be overlooked or brushed aside as simply post-traumatic stress disorder rather than a call for help.

Having one child serving our nation in the armed forces and another set to begin her service in less than a year, this is a personal as well as a professional concern as a registered nurse. I advocate proper support for those who have chosen to dedicate a part of their life to ensure that we as a nation maintain our freedom.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
