Letter: Defending Herrera Beutler

By Wesley Herman, Ridgefield
Published: October 24, 2016, 6:00am

I would like to address the constant flow of comments coming from readers castigating Jaime Herrera Beutler for opposing the Affordable Care Act while she benefits from health insurance superior to that available to the rest of us.

These benefits are not hers alone but seem to be available to all legislators. The real question should be, “Why does the ACA allow this disparity of benefits?” Jaime is rather to be commended for not allowing personal benefits to affect her honest evaluation of the act. This is not to accuse all supporters of the ACA of acting in self-interest, but I believe some take the attitude: “Since it doesn’t damage me and looks good, I’ll go along with it.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
