BOTHELL — Police have released interview tapes that shed light on why a Seattle-area high school shop teacher lied about being attacked by an unknown assailant.
KOMO-TV reports that the tapes include a three-hour interview in which 62-year-old Cal Pygott tells police he staged the attack after a failed suicide attempt in May. The Bothell High School teacher originally claimed that he was hit from behind and left to die with a zip tie around his neck.
On the tapes, Pygott describes putting a zip tie on his neck and hitting himself on the head with a hammer three or four times before realizing he wanted to live.
Police say the prosecutor will decide if the teacher should face any charges for filing a false report.
