Yale – The 84-year-old Yale Bridge on state Highway 503 is being upgraded with a new layer of pavement.

Granite Construction, working for the Washington State Department of Transportation, plans to close the bridge starting Tuesday.

“There’s never a good time to close a single-lane bridge, especially one that serves both Cowlitz and Clark counties,” said Project Engineer Lori Figone, in a press release. “But restoring the asphalt now helps preserve the wooden bridge deck under the roadway, ensuring we maximize the lifespan of this vital span.”

The bridge is expected to be closed as follows:

• Nightly closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Tuesday until the morning of Sept. 9. At that time crews will remove the existing layer of asphalt.

• Weekend closures, starting at 10 p.m. Sept. 9 until 5 a.m. Sept. 12. for paving.

• Nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Sept. 12 until the morning of Sept. 14 for striping and erosion control.
