Save the Date: Rev up a zucchini for Ridgefield’s Wild West celebration

Grab a zucchini and head to Ridgefield for Wild Wild West and Heritage Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. This Western-themed day of activities, plus local city lore, country music and zucchini races will be in Overlook Park, at Pioneer Street and Main Avenue. Create a pool noodle “horse,” enter a veggie vehicle in the Zucchini 500 or try out some apple printing. Country music, beer garden and barbecue will open at 11 a.m., followed by line dancing lessons at 1 p.m. The Clark County Historical Museum will help locals uncover the history of a property or building at 10 a.m., along with a historic walking tour at noon. The Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair will return to Esther Short Park, Columbia and West Eighth streets, showcasing local nonprofit agencies and churches, volunteers, activists and performers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 in downtown Vancouver. The entertainment lineup includes pianist Jim Templeton, Echoes of Yasgurs and the Vancouver USA Singers. There will be a “Pop-up” Peace Museum staffed by the Clark County Historical Museum where attendees can bring a personal “peace artifact” to the park for public display. The CRESA Community Expo gives the public a glimpse inside the 911 Dispatch Center and the Emergency Operations Center. First responders from across Clark County, including SWAT, search and rescue teams, law enforcement and fire agencies will be on hand with displays and demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10 at the CRESA Building, 710 W. 13th St., Vancouver. The ever popular Sheriff’s K-9 Unit will showcase its skills and there will be kids activities, vehicle displays, food and prizes. Celebrate the world of pop-culture with fellow fans at the annual Rose City Comic Con. Convention guests include hundreds of comic book artists, writers, animators, and game designers, along with voice, television and film actors including Billy Boyd, Chad Coleman, Joan Cusack, John Cusack, Summer Glau and Grant Imahara. Heavy-metal band Black Sabbath is on its farewell tour, featuring founding members Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler.  TBA:16 Time-Based Art Festival is a contemporary art festival taking place in unexpected spaces across Portland. This year will include a local highlight: the Camas High School Choir will perform with Luke Wyland and AU for a reprisal of their collaborative performance at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Lincoln Hall, 1620 S.W. For September’s Science on Tap, Kellar Autumn, professor at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, will explore “How Geckos Stick and Why We Care.” The lecture will talk about gecko physics — and the tiny mechanical forces that help the feet of gecko to adhere to vertical surfaces — and how that has helped create a new adhesive for robots and space junk.
