Letter: Senate derelict in duties

By Steven Tubbs, Vancouver

The constitution clearly contemplates a system of “checks and balances,” a tripartite system where the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government function together to provide governmental services “of, by and for the people.”

The legislative branch, however, has usurped powers to frustrate and curtail the roles of its counterparts. It seeks to act as the supreme authority in the land. It is time to impeach the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee for his failure to discharge his constitutional duty, which he has sworn to uphold, to conduct hearings on the nominee of the chief executive for an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The people, nationwide, have no other effective remedy. It is time to act. Abrogation of authority to prevent this usurpation is, by itself, a constitutional failure. Due process includes not only issues of substance but of procedure. Impeach Charles “Chuck” Grassley, R-Iowa.
