EUGENE, Ore. — A Springfield man who has pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend asked for the death penalty rather than life in prison.
The Register-Guard reports that on Tuesday a judge told William Eric Oliver that the death sentence was not an option in his case.
Oliver pleaded guilty to murdering Cynthia Corey in their Springfield apartment on Sept. 9, 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
According to court documents, the couple had recently moved to Oregon from San Francisco and Oliver was not adjusting well. When Corey asked to discuss their living arrangements — the couple was sleeping in separate beds — Oliver stabbed her more than 40 times.
