Letter: Act now on climate change

By Lynn Stiglich, VANCOUVER
Published: April 12, 2017, 6:00am

I am not a fan of climate change. How about those big snowstorms in the East, lack of a typical winter in the Midwest, or the rain and flooding in the South? Or the crazy amount of rain we got in February and March? Or the recent windstorms we experienced? Sure, we’ve always had weather like this, but it is intensifying, with greater frequency, property damage and loss of life. I hope the fact and science of climate change will hit home (figuratively) with climate deniers, before it hits home (literally).

Join the Vancouver Climate March, beginning at 12:30 p.m. April 29 at Marshall Park, support environmental groups, speak to your friends and family, and write to or call your elected officials. Let’s act individually and collectively. Think about mass migrations of climate refugees (which is already happening), food shortages, rising oceans, coral bleaching, flooding, drought, changing ecosystems, species extinctions, nasty hurricanes, and tornadoes.

You may think all these catastrophes happen someplace else, but they can and do happen everywhere. The clock is ticking, and we have a limited amount of time to act.

Author and climate activist Naomi Klein is right: “This changes everything.”
