The hysteria over the transgender bathroom issue constantly leaves me baffled. In Debbie Simond’s letter (“Leave bathroom law up to states,” April 9), she compares transgendered people to “pigs wearing lipstick.” She claims to not condone violence against the transgendered, but she would send a transgendered child who identifies as female into a men’s bathroom or locker room?
Her analogies and the language she uses could be a reason why 40 percent of transgendered adults report having attempted suicide, per the National Center for Transgender Equality.
I could find very few (if any) substantiated instances of a transgendered person attacking someone in a bathroom. However, according to the Human Rights Campaign, more transgendered people were killed in 2015 than any year on record.
I have two small children and zero fears about them sharing a bathroom with a transgendered person. However I do fear the narrow-mindedness of people who obsess about other’s genitalia, and compare people different than themselves to animals.
