Washington – A bill championed by Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center, clearing the way for children to use sunscreen at school passed the Senate on Monday and heads to the governor’s desk.

School employees currently cannot apply sunscreen on a student because it’s listed as a drug product.

Senate Bill 5404 would no longer classify the sunscreen as a drug product allowing for students to use it without a note from a doctor and parent.

“Just as sunscreen offers a measure of protection to children, this bill is about giving a measure of protection to schools,” Rivers said in an email.
