Letter: Selective Service pick is outrageous

By Robert Welch, RIDGEFIELD
Published: April 22, 2017, 6:00am

As a veteran, I find it outrageous and disrespectful for President Trump to appoint a non-veteran to lead the Selective Service System. To add insult to injury, Trump selected a buffoon like Don Benton to the post.

I guess it is no surprise, considering the five draft deferments Trump received — four for attending college and one for heel spurs that miraculously disappeared afterward (did I mention he was a multisport athlete in college)? This is the guy who, in 1997, told Howard Stern that sleeping around with women and avoiding sexually transmitted diseases was his personal Vietnam. He stated, “It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
