City officials will shave to help boy with cancer

Washougal – Declan Reagan turned 5 years old on March 28, and to celebrate, he and his family held a blood drive, collecting 52 units of blood for the American Red Cross. After being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when he was 4, Declan underwent 79 high doses of chemotherapy, two surgeries and five bone marrow punctures and received 40 blood-product transfusions.

His family recently learned Declan’s cancer was back, and he needs a bone marrow transplant. Making things even more complicated, Declan was diagnosed with a second cancer that he’ll need to beat before he can receive the transplant.

To help out the family — Declan’s father, Francis Reagan, is a police officer with the Washougal Police Department, and his mother, Lauren Reagan, stepped away from her job to care for Declan — city officials are hosting a fundraiser today.

Washougal Mayor Sean Guard and other community members will shave their heads to benefit the Reagan family. Guard will also shave his beard. The fundraiser will start at noon today at Washougal Fire Station 43, 1400 A St., Washougal, and donations will be accepted for the Reagan family.
