A large plume of smoke from a burning pile of scrap metal is visible from Vancouver this evening.

The fire is burning outdoors at a scrap metal recycling business, Schnitzer Steel Industries, 12005 N. Burgard Road in Portland. That’s in the vicinity of the St. Johns Bridge.

The Portland Fire Bureau has called in a two-alarm response to the fire.

Temperatures are near 90 degrees this evening, making the fire more difficult to fight.

The Columbian’s news partner, KATU-TV, has several photos of the fire.

The fire apparently was reported around 5:45 p.m.
