Letter: Terminal would pollute air

Why do oil towns stink?

It is standard industry practice with tank farms to vent the fumes straight into the air as the tanks are being filled.

That is in contrast to what happens when a truck delivers gasoline to the underground storage tanks at neighborhood gas stations.

In that case, one hose delivers gasoline to the underground tanks, and one hose transfers the fumes from the underground tanks back into the delivery truck.

Tesoro plans a through-put of up to 360,000 barrels of crude per day. Thus, fumes from 360,000 would be discharged.

The fumes from the marine vessels will be partly burned off in marine vapor combustion units, but the fumes from the on-land storage tanks will be vented directly into our air in West Vancouver.
