Letter: Repair the flag, fly it proudly

By Timothy A. Liesenfelder, VANCOUVER

I read the submission of Gary Naffziger commenting on the tattered condition of our national flag flying at the Clark County Fair (“Torn flag is disrespectful,” Aug. 10). I, too, was appalled to see the flag flying in such disrepair.

Yet, we live in “disposable America,” where everyone wants to just “run out and buy something new.” Would it be so difficult for Vancouver citizens with sewing skills to mend Old Glory?

I served four years active duty with the U.S. Army and, while my sewing skills are probably not up to snuff, I am sure there are others who would be willing. I wouldn’t think there are rules prohibiting “flag fixing” and am always taken aback when I see large flags torn from weather and typical usage that are simply in need of repair.

Smaller flags should be replaced but expensive large flags strike me as perfect examples of repair and fly proudly!
