“The last two virtues of a dying society are tolerance and apathy.” I thought of that quote as I read the Aug. 23 editorial “In Our View — Primary’s Date Not Problem,” assessing the lack of electorate to engage. Coincidentally, the quote also could be caption for a political cartoon in the Aug. 22 Columbian, where the sun is shaded 98 percent black, to represent anarchy, and 2 percent light, representing sanity.
Nothing is helped or resolved by masked and hooded groups of people who take matters into their own hand, violate others by throwing urine on them or verbally harass people who are exercising their free-speech rights or attending a rally to hear from their president.
Those of us who are not a part of the resist crowd would appreciate the media and people of influence to denounce the anarchists, just as they do white supremacist KKK groups, etc. Anarchists have no part towards a constructive dialog and their brand of hate will grow and thrive in an environment of tolerance and apathy, robbing a society of its normal function and its very soul.
