Letter: Flags of another stripe

Tooling down state Highway 503 recently in my Chevy, I came upon a late-model pickup sporting a huge American flag. That seems to be a thing these days with the “Trumplicans.” But, on second glance, it wasn’t an American flag at all, but a cheap knock-off. The red, white and blue desecrated, its stars and stripes were replaced with handguns and assault rifles.

The adolescent intent was clear: it’s an NRA member who flaunts it. But, given the context of President Donald Trump’s recent statements providing cover to all manner of racist hate groups, white nationalists and white supremacists, a more sinister message could easily be read between the stripes of the weaponized flag. Lost entirely was the true meaning of our flag and all it stands for — a great deal more than a repugnant NRA advertisement, or far worse.
