Letter: Tax bill is deceptive window dressing

By Judy Weber, LA CENTER

Our representative, Jaime Herrera Beutler, is touting her efforts to amend the tax bill to include funding for mental health and substance abuse. Her efforts in this area are “window dressing,” designed to deceive us into thinking that she is actually concerned about her constituents. This small adjustment does not balance the other loses.

Even conservative economists do not believe that the trickle-down boost to the economy will be sufficient to offset the tax cuts given to corporations and the top 1 percent. In order to control the deficit, this tax bill will ultimately lead to reductions in many other areas of government spending, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

If passed, this bill is guaranteed to increase the gap between the very rich and rest of us and will move this nation even more rapidly toward an oligarchy in which our nation is controlled by the ultra wealthy.

We must oppose this legislation.
