Jovon Sewell’s putback with 18.8 seconds left in overtime proved to be the game-winner to lift the Skyview Storm to a 46-45 overtime victory over Wilsonville (Ore.) in Wednesday’s quarterfinal of the Capitol City Classic boys basketball tournament at Willamette University.
Sewell finished with six points, and the game-winning field goal was his first points since early in the third quarter. Alex Schumacher’s bucket for the Storm sent the game into overtime tied at 40-all.
Skyview coach Matt Gruhler challenged his Storm to play defense the final 1 minute, 36 seconds of regulation following Schumacher’s game-tying bucket since Oregon high school basketball does not feature a shot clock.
“I asked them to play 96 seconds worth of defense and in overtime and we’d get out of there with a win.”
It came after Wilsonville, the two-time defending OSAA 5A state champion, began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 scoring run to take a 37-36 lead. Wilsonville’s Zach Rossetti scored all 11 of his team’s points in the fourth and two of the five in overtime. He finished with a team-best 20 points for the Wildcats.
Gruhler said the game had a state tournament-like feel to it.
“They’re highly-ranked and knew it’d be like in the state tournament,” Gruhler said.
The win improves the Storm to 8-0 on the season, and advances to Thursday’s 9 p.m. semifinal.
