Letter: Support kids through levies

I strongly disagree with the letter from Stephanie Turlay (“Our Readers’ Views,” Jan. 25) that undocumented students should pay tuition to attend public school because it costs more to educate them.

For 10 years, I volunteered two days a week at an elementary school in Vancouver, so I am aware of the costs of education.

Do we now charge tuition for students with autism or mental or physical disabilities because we have to hire special teachers and aids? Do we now charge tuition to students with behavioral problems who have to see a counselor on a regular basis?

Do we charge tuition to athletes because we have to maintain stadiums and furnish uniforms for them? Of course the tuition would have to be on a sliding scale. Football players would have to pay more because their uniforms cost more than a swim suit for a student on the swim team.

Where do we draw the line? We elect school board members to make those decisions and if we don’t like their decisions, we vote them out of office.

Though my children and my granddaughters attended a Catholic elementary school, for which I paid tuition, I always voted for the bond levies and I will continue to do so. Vote “yes” for the current levy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
