Dana Milbank’s Jan. 28 opinion column, “Trump’s lies are a distraction from higher-stakes issues,” was dead on.
If I was asked to use one word to describe Trump’s life, his campaign for the presidency, and now his occupation of the office, I would use “subterfuge.” Merriam-Webster defines it as “deception by artifice or stratagem in order to conceal, escape, or evade.”
My question to The Columbian, and by extension to all media outlets, is what is your strategy? How are you planning to combat Trump’s subterfuge? May I suggest parallel stories? Every time he throws up a diversion designed to occupy media space, time, and money, could you also run a parallel story about the things he is trying to hide? Run them side by side whether in the paper or online.
My hope is that readers will see what’s on the menu right in front of their eyes. My hope is they will be drawn to the important stuff as much as they are to the distraction. I get it, this will be a Herculean task. He doesn’t think you’re up to it. I have faith.
