Save the Date: Sunday Sounds kicks off; gear up for Cruise the Couve

Spend a Sunday outside enjoying the sounds of a free concert in the park. Energetic band Hit Machine will perform pop and rock hits from all eras to kick off the Sunday Sounds concert series at Columbia Tech Center Park, 17701 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver. Or take a Sunday stroll by the Cathlapotle Plankhouse on Oak Appreciation Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. This Second Sunday activity will highlight the rare Oregon white oak habitat at the refuge. Visitors can try an acorn muffin, making ink from an oak gall, touch a 400-year-old tree and learn about the tree on a naturalist-led hike at 2 p.m. There will be presentations on creating and preserving oak habitats at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the Carty Unit of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, 28908 N.W. Next weekend, be part of the action as “robbers” stop and board the train to steal passengers’ coins and jewelry during the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad’s Train Robbery rides. The train will take a 13-mile round trip through North Clark County, including a stop to see Yacolt Falls, before returning to the station, 207 N. Railroad Ave., Yacolt. The train leaves at noon and 2:30 p.m. July 15-16 and Aug. 19-20. The celebration of car culture will continue with Cruise the Couve on Vancouver’s Main Street, as hot rods, classic cars and more are invited to show off from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. July 15. The cruse-in will be between 28th and Fifth streets in downtown Vancouver, with attendees watching the parade of vehicles from the sidewalks. Admission is free. The Fort Vancouver Antique Equipment Association will host the 23rd annual Rural Heritage Fair, which celebrates the history of agriculture, logging and industrial mechanization in Clark County. There will be a number of steam and early gas engines, along with vintage cars, fire engines, tractors and farm equipment. This year’s Camas Days will take inspiration from fairy tales with the theme “Once Upon a Time,” as downtown Camas streets transform into venues for arts and crafts, live music, and children’s activities. The community festival includes the annual Kids Parade, the Camas Days Grand Parade and the bathtub races. The microbrew street, “A Toast of Camas,” will be open 5 to 11 p.m. both days for those 21 and older. Camas Days runs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 21 and 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 22. Magenta Theater will host an Evening With Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra, a fundraiser to help the theater company pay for an external sign. Linda Lee Michelet and John Gilmore will perform original arrangements of songs made famous by Peggy Lee and Quincy Jones, along with favorite tunes from Frank Sinatra’s “Live at the Sands” album at 7:30 p.m. July 21 and 22 at the theater, 1108 Main St. Vancouver. Learn about leis and hula during the annual Hula and Craft Workshops offered by the Ke Kukui Foundation as part of the 3 Days of Aloha Hawaiian festival. Workshops are open to all ages, ranging from beginning hula instructions and outrigger canoe paddling to Hawaiian language and history from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 and 28 at Clark College, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.
