Letter: Southern Democrats on wrong side

If news is the first draft of history, then today’s journalistic distortions are hardly new. For decades, conservatives have been painted with the broad brush of white supremacy when historical facts do not validate that accusation.

A few examples to consider: Our Civil War was started in order to maintain enslaved people by Southern Democrats. The KKK was a terrorist organization started after the Civil War by Southern Democrats. “Jim Crow” laws and poll tests/taxes were passed to intimidate blacks by Southern Democrats.

In the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision, four of the seven justices supporting the “separate but equal” doctrine were all Southern Democrats. Resistance to integration in the Little Rock school district and the University of Alabama were led by Southern Democrats. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were filibustered and diluted by Southern Democrats.

Based on an honest historical review, the donkey symbol of the Democratic Party should be banned as racist, just like the Confederate (i.e., Democratic) battle flag.
