Save the Date: Outdoors opportunities abound heading into August

The city of Ridgefield will be hosting a Picnic in the Park as a Ridgefield First Saturday event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5. Picnickers are encouraged to bring a lunch, with lunches also available for purchase. There will be water balloon games, interactive art projects, a scavenger hunt and live music. A beer garden will open at noon at Overlook Park, Pioneer Street and Main Avenue. Comedian and storyteller Lonnie Bruhn will perform “Signs of A Midlife Crisis,” a new, one-person show touching on difficult experiences, at 9 p.m. Aug. 5 at Nick’s Bar and Grill, 22011 N.E. 399th St., Amboy. He will share his story about his eldest son’s diagnosis with borderline personality disorder, a hiatus from comedy and tackling mental illness as both a father and a son. Comedy on Tap for this month will be headlined by Tristian Spillman — who will be recording this performance for his first feature album — at 8 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St. Vancouver. Spillman will be joined by comedians Alex Avery, Amanda Lynn Deal, Carter, Eric Cash, Isaac Pendergrass, Justin Ammerman, Laci Day and Steven Tye. Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance presents the Washougal Art Festival, a juried art show and sale featuring 27 regional artists, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 in Reflection Plaza, 1703 Main St., Washougal. Media will range from recycled steel pieces to photography, oil paintings and books. A raffle of artwork will be hosted by the Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance. Vancouver Brewfest: Summer Edition will be a celebration of craft beer from the Pacific Northwest. Attendees can try a variety of beers, along with wine, cider and mead. There will be food vendors, craft artisans and musical performances from local bands. The festival is open 4 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 12 in Esther Short Park, West Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver. The ¡Viva Vancouver Festival! will feature Latin foods, salsa music and beer while supporting the Latino community. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Clark County Latino Youth Leadership Conference, an organization that motivates high school students to seek opportunities. The two-day event will run 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 18 and noon to 10 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Vancouver Landing Amphitheater, 100 Columbia St., Vancouver. The Spartan Sprint returns to Washougal, as hundreds of participants take on the tough obstacle course filled with mud, fire, walls and barbed wire. Races are divided into elite, competitive and open categories. Spectators are invited to watch and cheer on the racers from the festival grounds. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Washougal Motocross Park, 40205 N.E. Borin Road, Washougal. The Heirloom Tomato and Garlic Festival features 20 varieties of tomato sand 10 varieties of garlic for tasting, with Washington State University master gardeners on hand to answer questions from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at Northwest Organic Farms, 17713 N.W. 61st Ave., Ridgefield.
