Letter: Guess who will pay for wall — us

By David Irwin, VANCOUVER
Published: July 30, 2017, 6:00am

That the $1.6 billion cost of the border wall will not be paid by the Mexicans, as promised, is no surprise; it will fall to American taxpayers. Republican representatives of border areas, and those representing large numbers of Hispanics, are skeptical of its effectiveness. There are environmental concerns — some raised by ranchers in the targeted areas. A wall is a symbolic gesture, while the complicated issues of human and drug trafficking remain unaddressed. And the punchline: the $1.6 billion only buys 74 miles of wall on a 2,000-mile border.

Sadly, this bad joke of a presidency continues.
