ROSEBURG, Ore. — A Douglas County man in jail on probation violations is now facing murder, kidnapping and other charges.

Oregon State Police says 34-year-old Troy Phelps, of Myrtle Creek, is accused of fatally shooting 26-year-old Brandon Michael near the South Umpqua River. Police say he then kidnapped Michael’s girlfriend and their 10-month-old son.

Police said Saturday that the crimes took place May 30 and 31.

They say Phelps took the mother and son to a home in Myrtle Creek. The girlfriend escaped and called for help at a nearby home. The mother and child were not injured.

An autopsy Thursday found Michael died from a gunshot wound.
