BEND, Ore. – A 73-year-old resident of a Bend assisted-living home was arrested on arson charges after a blaze prompted an evacuation.

KTVZ-TV reports that police and fire agencies were called to the Regency Village on Friday night.

Neighbors reported seeing flames climbing the south side of the building.

Residents were evacuated until firefighters extinguished the fire.

Police said Saturday that James Kenneth Grant, a resident of the facility, was a suspect.

Grant was taken to St. Charles Bend for a medical evaluation, then to the Deschutes County Jail. He was booked on 67 counts each of first-degree arson and attempted criminally negligent homicide — one for each life threatened — and criminal mischief.

His bail totaled more than $5 million. He’s scheduled to make his first court appearance this afternoon.
