Fireworks prohibited in national forest

Vancouver — Officials with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest want to remind the public to leave the fireworks and exploding targets at home when they visit the forest this weekend.

Possessing or using fireworks or other explosives of any size is prohibited year-round in the forest.

In order to keep wildfire risks at a minimum, the Forest Service is urging the public to check for fire restrictions, build campfires safely and have water and a shovel nearby and to dispose of cigarettes in an ashtray.

It also urges people to avoid driving or parking in tall grass or driving on roads with accumulations of fine fuels because hot vehicle components can start a fire.
