WARRENTON, Ore. — The carcass of a 36-foot sperm whale washed ashore this week on the northern Oregon Coast.

The Daily Astorian reports the carcass had been spotted off the coast of Newport last week. Strong currents pushed it north, and it washed ashore Monday near the Peter Iredale shipwreck in Fort Stevens State Park.

Seaside Aquarium staff members took measurements of the carcass that will remain on the beach to decompose. The whale’s lower jaw was removed. It will be transferred to Portland State University.

The aquarium says the last sperm whale to wash ashore on the northern Oregon Coast was in 2012.
