Letter: Protesters aren’t riotous

By Margaret McDonald, Vancouver

I don’t know where Mr. Thomas (“Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 28) gets his news but I would like to inform him once again that the demonstrations that have taken place all over the country, and will continue to do so, can in no way be called riots.

Emotions are high and some people, like the 86-year-old woman knocked down in Tucson, Ariz., for getting in a police officer’s face, are very passionate. But any breaking of windows or fire-setting has not been done by the peaceful resisters, but by small anarchist contingents or those who would provoke bad coverage.

Whoever is telling the country that the many people who are employing their First Amendment rights of peaceful assembly and free expression are rioting is simply lying. But what else is new lately?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
