The U.S. is the most welcoming recipient of immigrants in the world, by far. As of 2016, there were 43.3 million non-natural born individuals living in the U.S. When you include their U.S.-born children that number grows to 84.3 million, or 27 percent of the total U.S. population. Last year we welcomed 1.3 million new immigrants, and since 2000 the U.S. has welcomed more than 19 million new immigrants. Nineteen million is the equivalent of the entire population of the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, South Dakota and North Dakota combined.
Application for immigration falls into four basic categories: Family unification, work visas, refugees and asylum seekers. President Obama increased the refugee quota for FY2016 to 85,000, moving up to 110,000 for FY2017. President Trump’s order reduces the FY2017 refugee quota to 50,000 and temporarily suspends (90 days) the acceptance of new refugees. More than 37,000 new refugees have already been accepted into the U.S. in 2017. His order does nothing to reduce the total number of immigrants allowed to migrate to the U.S. this year. Trump is neither anti-immigrant, nor anti-Muslim. He is anti-terrorist and anti-illegal immigrant. Protesters should know their facts.
