A family of four was displaced after a fire at an east Vancouver apartment early Monday morning. The fire was reported at 5:52 a.m. at an apartment complex at 3901 E. 18th St., in Vancouver’s Maplewood Neighborhood.

Arriving crews found the bottom floor apartment filled with smoke but
no fire showing, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Raymond Egan said.

The accidental fire started inside the fireplace at the residence,
then spread when it ignited some nearby wood, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

Three adults and one child who lived at the residence were displaced, Scarpelli said.

Damage to the structure and contents, which was mostly due to smoke, was an estimated $10,000, Scarpelli said.
