Letter: Why is Trump hiding tax returns?

By Tom Hubbard, VANCOUVER

I’m afraid the media and Congress are ignoring the obvious. President Trump is attempting to squelch the multiple investigations into his team’s possible collusion with Russia because it is likely to require him to disclose his tax returns.

Trump does not want his tax returns open to public scrutiny. And he knows that, because of inherent presidential protections, the only legal avenue to exposing his taxes is through a Congressional or FBI investigation.

Unlike his predecessors, this president has stubbornly opposed the public’s rational request for him to follow tradition by producing his tax returns to provide visibility to his business activities. Even if his never-ending “under audit” excuse is true, there is no legal reason those taxes cannot be made public. Trump’s continuing refusal for financial transparency leads a reasonable person to conclude that there is a “there” there.

The lesson most painfully learned during the Nixon/Watergate investigation still applies: “Follow the money.” In this case, Trump’s unethically concealed tax returns are the direct path to the money and the answers all Americans deserve.
