Letter: Memories of old Vancouver

By Bonnie Reeves, VANCOUVER
Published: May 24, 2017, 6:00am

I am responding to Toni Fulkerson’s May 15 letter, “Don’t forget Vancouver’s history.” The information was correct; I’m adding some information.

I worked at Van Ship on the dock. Fifty “baby flat tops” were built there, as well as the Liberty ships. The “flat tops” were finished in March of 1945.

I had worked for Butler, a sub-contractor, belonging to the Painters’ Union. Our main job was taping fiberglass insulation seams after the electricians finished their wiring. My mother-in-law worked on the “Way” as a burner. My sister-in-law worked over a black women’s crew on the dock. I was an early “Rosie the Riveter” member.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
