Twenty-five veterans in Vancouver will get rental assistance vouchers from Vancouver Housing Authority, the federal departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs announced Friday.

A total of 675 additional vouchers valued at $4.9 million were awarded to public housing authorities across Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska.

“These additional resources will enable our partners to help even more vets come in from the cold and speed the day when we have fulfilled our nation’s commitment to ending veteran homelessness in America,” HUD Northwest Regional Administrator Jeff McMorris said in a news release.

The boost in voucher availability is part of a continued effort to end veteran homelessness through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program, “which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA,” the news release said.

Vancouver Housing Authority already has 186 vouchers for veterans. With the additional 25 rental assistance vouchers, there is now a total of 211. Across the four-state region, there are 4,753 available vouchers.

“Our nation’s veterans deserve more than a life on the streets,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in the news release.
