The Klineline Kids Fishing Derby was held at the Salmon Creek Park in Vancouver on April 13 and 14. Cold weather made the trout reluctant to bite, but overall the kids and parents had a great time.
The event is held at Klineline Pond within the park every year. Sections of the lake were netted off, and the WDFW stocked the lake with catchable rainbow trout.
The WDFW and the Klineline Kids Fishing non-profit put on the event with help from volunteers from the Vancouver Wildlife League, the Clark-Skamania Fly Fishers, and many others. The first day was for special needs kids and adults, and the second day was for the general public.
Klineline Kids Fishing non-profit chairman Bill Czech said the event was a “phenomenal success.” Czech said it was especially fun to see the smiles of the kids as they learned to cast and fish.
Pikeminnow clinic set for April 26
The WDFW will hold a seminar on bounty fishing for Northern Pikeminnow on April 26 at 6 pm at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Region 5 Office in Ridgefield.
The pikeminnow bounty program is designed to reduce the population of northern pikeminnows, which feed heavily on juvenile salmon and steelhead as they migrate down the Columbia River. The states pay a bounty for every pikeminnow caught over 9 inches. Fishermen must register for each days fishing, and bring the caught fish to the same registration site for payment vouchers.
The season will run from May 1 to Sept. 30.
State approves four-day razor clam digs
Clam diggers have one last chance to dig razor clams this season during the final opening set to begin April 19.
